About Íngrid Betancourt
Íngrid Betancourt is a renowned Colombian politician who was held hostage by the Revolutionary Armed Forces between 2002 and 2008. She was captured during her campaign for the presidency in 2002. Betancourt is globally admired for her anti-corruption stance.
Known for her association with the Oxygen Green Party, Betancourt began her political journey in the 1990s. During the early stages of her career, she worked with the Ministry of Foreign Trade, and the Ministry of Finance. Four years later, she became a member of the Chamber of Representatives.
In 1998, she was elected as the Senator of Colombia and served in that position until 2001. In January 2022, she announced her intention to compete in the presidential elections which would be held later that year.
Family
She’s the daughter of former politician and beauty queen Yolanda Pulecio, and Colombian economist Gabriel Betancourt. Her marriage to her first husband Fabrice Delloye ended in 1990. Seven years later, she became the wife of author Juan Carlos Lecompte. This politician has two kids named Lorenzo and Melanie.
Education
Betancourt graduated from the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris. She also studied at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.
Honors
She has been the recipient of many medals including the Prince of Asturias Award, and the Légion d'honneur.
Trivia
In 2002, she published the English version of her memoir titled “Until Death Do Us Part: My Struggle to Reclaim Colombia”.
