About Ion Antonescu
Ion Antonescu was a fierce Romanian marshal, military officer, and statesman who served as a dictator and Prime Minister of two successive German "wartime dictatorships" during World War II. He took on the title "Conducător" during his reign.
Background & Education
He was born in Pitești, Romania. He attended Craiova's Infantry and Cavalry School and graduated in 1904. Right after graduation, he joined the Romanian Army as a Second Lieutenant.
Army & Political Career
He fought for the Romanian army during the "World War I Romanian Campaign" and the "1907 peasants' revolt." He then served as the head of the Romanian general staff. Between 1937 and 1938, he was the minister of defense of Romania.
On September 4, 1940, he was appointed Prime Minister of Romania. During his tenure, he initially gained majority local support through his local reforms program and his declaration of war against the "USSR" to recover Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. However, his support eventually eroded after the Russians killed many local soldiers during the war.
In August 1944, King Michael of Romania staged a coup d'état that resulted in overthrowing his government.
Death
On June 1, 1946, the Romanian communist people's court sentenced him to death, and he was killed as a war criminal. He died at age 63.
