About Ira Hayes
Ira Hayes was nineteen years old when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve of the United States in 1942. He underwent marine parachute training to qualify for the specialized combat unit, the Paramarines before being assigned to fight in the Bougainville campaign.
Hayes is remembered best for being one of the six US Marines who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi after they successfully captured the island of Iwo Jima. They originally came to prominence through the legendary photo, “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima” as captured by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press at the time.
Family Life
He grew up as the first of the six children of Joseph Hayes, a World War I veteran-turned-subsistence farmer and Nancy Hamilton, a Sunday school teacher. He was from the Pima tribe of Native Americans.
Achievements
He was honored with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Later Life and Death
He suffered from PTSD and became an alcoholic. He died on January 24, 1955 from hypothermia and alcohol poisoning.
