About Ira Levin
Iran Levin was the brain behind the novels “Rosemary’s Baby”, “The Stepford Wives”, and the popular play “Deathtrap. The American novelist, playwright and a songwriter also served in the army for two years.
Family and Education
He was born to Jewish parents. He married twice. He had three children with his first wife.
The New York-born playwright went to University of Des Moines and New York University. At the latter, he studied English and Philosophy.
Career
He started as a scriptwriter, writing scripts for radio and television. His first written script was “Leda’s Portraits'' in 1955. “No Time for Sergeants” was his first produced play.
In 1958, the play was used as a movie which featured the popular actor Nick Adams. He later produced a play titled “Deathtrap”, which was later adapted into a movie, starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.
As a novelist, his first novel was “A Kiss Before Dying”, which was released in 1953. This novel was also featured in a movie.
Awards
In 1954, his first novel earned him an Edgar Award in the category “Best First Novel”. His play “Deathtrap” landed him his second Edgar Award.
Death
He died from a heart attack. He was 78.
