About Irena Sendler
Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker and nurse known for saving the lives of about 2,500 Jewish children in the infamous Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust. She was eventually caught by the Nazis, who wasted no time in imprisoning and torturing her. She was later sentenced to death, but managed to escape from prison and survived the war.
Family Life
She was the daughter of Janina and Dr. Stanisław Krzyżanowski. She was married and divorced three times. She had three children with her second husband Stefan Zgrzembski.
Trivia
In 2003, she was honored with Poland's highest civilian honor, the Order of the White Eagle.
She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on three occasions.
In 2003, she received a personal letter from Pope John Paul II applauding her for her extraordinary humanitarian effort during World War II.
