About Irène Joliot-Curie
Irene Joliot-Curie was one of the greatest ever French chemists and physicists. In 1935, she and her husband, Frédéric Joliot-Curie jointly won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering “Artificial Radioactivity”.
Background & Education
She was a native of Paris, France. Irene was part of the earliest group of students tutored by “The Cooperative” group. However, she later attended “College Sevigne” in Paris and then, between 1914 and 1916, she enrolled at Sorbonne’s Faculty of Science department. She then earned her physics and mathematics baccalaureate degree from the Sorbonne in 1918.
Career Highlights
She worked as a nurse radiographer during World War I and became a Doctor of science in 1925. In 1932, Irene was appointed as a lecturer and eventually became a professor at Sorbonne’s Faculty of Science in 1937. During her career, she served as an Undersecretary for scientific research in France, the Radium Institute’s director and commissioner of the “French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA)”.
Major Discovery
In 1935, she and her husband won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on synthesizing newly discovered radioactive elements. The research was presented in their joint article Production “artificielle d'éléments radioactive, Preuve chimique de transformation des éléments (1934)".
Death
On March 17, 1956, she died in Paris, France aged 58, from acute leukemia caused by her intensive exposure to X-rays and polonium.
