About Irvin D. Yalom
Irvin David Yalom is an American psychiatrist, published author and emeritus professor at Stanford University.
Early Life and Career
Though originally from Poland, Yalom’s parents emigrated from Russia to the United States. He attended George Washington University and later received his Doctor of Medicine from the Boston School of Medicine in 1956. After a brief stint in the US Army, Yalom began his teaching career at Stanford University in psychology.
Yalom has several scholarly writings to his name. He published “The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy” in 1970. He also produced a number of novels such as “Every Day Gets a Little Closer”, which he co-wrote with one of his patients. Most of his works have been used in various textbooks and college classes.
He also featured in a 2003 documentary called “Flight from Death.”
Accomplishments
Throughout his career, Yalom has won several awards, including the 1974 Edward Strecker Award for contributions in psychiatry; the 1976 Foundation’s Fun Award for research in psychiatry by the American Psychiatric Award; 1987 Fellowship Award by The Rockefeller Foundation; and the 2009 International Sigmund Freud Award for Psychotherapy.
Wife and Children
He was married to renowned feminist writer and professor, Marilyn Yalom who passed away in 2019. They had four children: Eve, Reid, Victor, and Ben.
