Jones, the American legendary songwriter and saxophonist, led one of the most epic 1920’s bands. The band is known for iconic songs such as “It Had to be You” and “Swingin’ Down in the Lane”.
Early Life
Born in Coalton, Ohio, he grew up in Michigan and he was privately tutored for the saxophone and piano.
Career Facts
The early days in his music career witnessed him writing songs. Later, after finding his orchestra, he featured artists such as Peewee Irwin and Jack Jenny. The band picked up speed in Chicago where they recorded for The Brunswick Records for over a decade. In 1921, they released their debut hit “Wabash Blues”. As a prolific composer, he has written hit songs such as “On the Alamo”, “Broken Hearted Melody”, “The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else” and “Indiana Moon”.
Recognition
He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1989.
