About Italo Balbo
The Italian fascist Italo Balbo was known to be the only leading fascist to oppose the Nazi alliance with Germany. He spent his years dutifully serving as Italy's Marshal of the Air Force and was also the Governor General of Libya.
Balbo lived most of his childhood in Italy. As a child who believed in his country's revolution, he attempted to join the Albanian revolt at the age of 14. 1915 saw the fascist join the Italian Royal Army during WWI and later returned home to work as a clerk after the war.
Balbo was always a politician during his early days. It was evident in 1921 when he joined the National Fascist Party and soon became its secretary. He later became a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1924 to 1940 and also held the position of Minister of the Air Force from 1929 to 1933. Balbo became the Governor General of Italian Libya from 1934 until he died in 1940.
Balbo married Emanuela Florio in 1924 and was survived by 3 children.
The Italian anti-aircraft batteries defending the airstrip mistook the aircraft for a British one and opened fire on Balbo’s aircraft as it attempted to land. It was shot down and Balbo met his untimely demise. His death was rumored to be an assassination orchestrated by Mussolini.
