About Italo Svevo
Though he got off to a slow start, the Italian writer and businessman gained literacy success with his 1923 psychoanalysis-themed book, “La coscienza di Zeno.” His posthumously published books include “La novella del buon vecchio e della bella fanciulla" and “Viaggio sentimentale a altri racconti inediti.”
Early Life & Education
One of seven children, he was born in Trieste, Italy. He was educated in a boarding school and later pursued a 2-year program at Istituto Revoltella.
Writing Career
His first novel, “Una vita,” which was revolutionary in nature was rejected after its 1982 publication. His follow-up, “Senilità,” was not successful either. His next publication in 1923, “La coscienza di Zeno,” featured Zeno Cosini, the protagonist, and the memoirs he wrote in coping with his mental illness. This became a critical success thanks to James Joyce, the Irish novelist, who helped translate into French and led its publication in Paris.
Trivia
Before he could publish a sequel to “La conscienza di Zeno,” he succumbed to a car crash.
