About J Dilla
James Dewitt Yancey, known on stage as J Dilla was an American rapper and record producer better recognized as one third of popular hip-hop group, Slum Village.
He formed the band, Slum Village in 1996 with his classmates and fellow rappers, Baatin and T3, releasing their debut album, Fantastic, Vol. 1 in 1997.
He was born to Beverly Dewitt Yancey, a jazz bassist and Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, a former opera singer.
He grew up with three younger siblings; two brothers known as John and Earl and a sister named Martha. He had two daughters known as Ty-Monae Whitlow and Ja’Mya Yancey.
He was posthumously honored with the Record Producer of the Year and Artist of the Year awards at the PLUG Awards in 2007.
He died in 2006, three days after his birthday and the release of his final album titled, Donuts.
His music has been featured in several television programs and ads including UK mobile network O2’s ad, and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
His first job was with the Detroit Police Department as a junior police cadet; ironically, he released a single titled, “Fuck the Police”.
