About J. Edgar Hoover
J. Edgar Hoover was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a position he held from 1935 until his death in 1972. He is credited with playing a crucial role in founding the FBI and turning it into a scientific crime-fighting agency with the introduction of forensic laboratories and a centralized fingerprint file.
Career
In August 1919, he was made the head of the Bureau of Investigation's General Intelligence Division. By 1924, he had risen to the position of the acting director of the Bureau of Investigation, whose name was changed to Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI in 1935.
Trivia
During the latter years of his life, it was found out that he abused his powers as Director of the FBI.
