About J. J. Thomson
Physicist Joseph John Thomson became world-renowned in the late 1890s for discovering the first-ever subatomic particle, the electron. He found out that negatively-charged particles (electrons) were present in cathode rays in 1897. He was also the first person to find evidence for stable element isotopes.
Family Life
He was the eldest son of Emma Swindells and Joseph James Thomson. His younger brother’s name was Frederick Vernon Thomson. He tied the knot with Rose Elisabeth Paget in 1890. Their two children were Nobel laureate physicist George Paget Thomson and author Joan Paget Thomson.
Honors
He received accolades such as the Nobel Prize in Physics, Hughes Medal, Smith’s Prize, Faraday Medal, Albert Medal and Royal Medal.
Death
He died in Cambridge, England, on 30 August, 1940.
