Early Life & Education
A graduate of England’s University of Bristol, he was born in Nice in the era of WWII. He obtained a master’s degree from the University of Provence in France.
Early Career
He started as a teacher in the U.S. In 1983, he wrote a doctoral thesis on the defeat of the indigenous Purépecha people. The work was published in a French magazine. After a period of teaching in various universities, he turned to a career in writing.
Writing Career
His claim to fame was his 1963 novel “Le Procès-Verbal.” In 2022, the book made the "Big Jubilee Read" list of 70 books selected to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
Personal Life
He got married to Jémia Jean, a Moroccan, and had three daughters with her.
Award
In addition to the Nobel Prize in Literature, he received the 1963 Prix Renaudot for his novel “Le Procès-Verbal.”
