About Jack Chevigny
Jack Chevigny was a football player and military officer who served in the US Marine Corps. Sadly, he was killed in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. While playing in his college team, he was popularly known for shouting “That one was for the Gipper” while scoring a touchdown.
Childhood & Education
Chevigny was born to Julius and Rose Ann Chevigny and grew up in Dyer, Indiana. He played football in high school and graduated at the top of his class in 1924. He entered the University of Notre Dame and had an extremely successful varsity football career.
Career & Military Service
In 1929, Chevigny was appointed coach of Notre Dame’s football team and helped them win two National Championships. After earning a law degree from the school, he went on to coach the Chicago Cardinals and later was appointed head coach at St Edwards University and the University of Texas. Chevigny ended his coaching career and practiced law before he was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1943.
