About Jack Layton
Before he actively joined politics, Jack Layton was a vocal figure in Toronto and championed lots of progressive programs. In 1991, he contested for the position of the mayor, but lost to June Rowlands. He served in other positions in the city’s council before he was appointed the New Democratic Party’s leader in 2003. He made the party very popular during his eight years rule.
The following year, he won the elections to represent the people of Toronto—Danforth in Parliament. In 2011, he led the party to win 103 seats in parliament which gave them the opportunity to become the Official Opposition, with Layton becoming the leader.
Family
His father, Robert Layton, also served as a Member of Parliament. He was the son of Doris Elizabeth Steeves.
Between 1969 and 1983, he was married to Sally Halford. Until his death, he was married to Canadian politician Olivia Chow. He had two kids named Sarah Layton and Mike Layton. The latter is also a well-known politician.
Education
He was the students’ leader during his time at Hudson High School. In 1970, he completed his political science studies at McGill University. He also attended York University.
Death
It is understood that his death was caused by complications of prostate cancer.
Trivia
He inspired the 2013 movie entitled “Jack”. His character was portrayed by popular actor Rick Roberts.
