About Jackie Cochran
The history of women in aviation will not be complete without the mentioning of Jackie Cochran. The American pilot was a very popular figure in the aviation industry during the 1940s and 1950s.
She gained nationwide attention when she partook in the 1934 edition of the MacRobertson Air Race. Her popularity grew three years later following her performance in the famous Bendix race, in which she came up with a new world record in the women’s category.
She went ahead to set many records and was regarded as America’s best female aviator by the end of 1938. The following year, she pleaded with Eleanor Roosevelt, then President of the United States, to start a women’s flying unit in the U.S. Air Forces. In 1943, she was named the Women Airforce Service Pilots’ wartime head.
Family
At birth, she was named Bessie Lee Pittman and was raised by her parents Ira and Mary Pittman. Her first son with Robert Cochran died at age five. She later became the wife of Atlas Corp’s founder Floyd Bostwick Odlum.
Recognition
She was honored with laurels like the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Distinguished Service Medal. In 1964, the American Academy of Achievement honored her with its Golden Plate Award. She has also been included in the National Women's Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, and the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
