About Jacqueline Cochran
Orphaned early in life and with little formal education, but a lifetime fascination, American pilot Jaqueline Cochran learned to fly at the age of 22. A businesswoman, she served as the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots’ director during WWII, and set a women's altitude record as well as smash speed records.
Family
Jacqueline Cochran, aka Bessie Lee Pittman, was the youngest of five kids. She had two marriages. Her first marriage was to Jack Cochran. Her second marriage was to American lawyer and businessman Floyd Bostwick Odlum, who was about 14 years older than Cochran.
Career
She started taking flying lessons at Roosevelt Airfield in 1932 and earned her pilot's license in just three weeks.
Aviatrix Jackie was the only female in the Bendix race, and established a new women's world speed record in 1937.
Jacqueline Cochran Cosmetics was a beauty brand she founded in 1935 and maintained successfully until she sold it in 1963.
Awards
She was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for her military service in 1945.
Trivia
Prior to becoming a pilot, she was a beautician.
