About Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet
An ardent believer in political absolutism, the French bishop Jacques Bénigne Bossuet was an advocate for the divine right of kings. He was equally renowned for his sharp oratory gift.
Early Life
Raised in a family of magistrates, he studied theology at the Collège de Navarre in Paris.
Highlights
After his ordination in 1652, he moved to Metz and joined a canonry. There, he aimed at conjoining the Protestants with the Catholic in order to have a single religion: Catholicism. He asserted that the French clergy must be primarily loyal to the king and not the Pope. His reputation as a great preacher soared during the next decade in Paris. In 1662, he was invited to preach the Lenten before King Louis XIV.
Controversy
His intolerant side often sparked controversy. For instance, he judged theatre as immoral, and attacked the religion called Quietism.
