About Jacques Demy
Known for his great finesse which birthed such works as the musical romantic drama film “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg”, the French film director and writer had a unique penchant for making his films so alluring that they could turn boring realities into magical fairy tales.
Born at Pontchâteau, Loire-Atlantique in France, he created his first animated film at the age of 9 with stripes of film.
He debuted his directorial prowess on his first feature film “Lola", which starred actors Marc Michel and Anouk Aimée. He followed up three years later with “La Baie des Anges”, which explored the subject of gambling. His most famous musical film “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg,” which was released the following year was so successful that it garnered five Academy Awards nominations. The musical starred Anne Vernon, Marc Michel, Catherine Deneuve, and Nino Castelnuovo.
Other directorial credits chalked by the French filmmaker include “The Young Girls of Rochefort,” “Model Shop" and “Donkey Skin”. The latter, which was released in 1970, starred Jean Marais, Delphine Seyrig, Catherine Deneuve and Jacques Perrin.
He married fellow film director Agnès Varda in 1962 and has one son. He adopted Agnés’ daughter, Rosalie.
In 1946, “Les Parapluies de Cherbourg” won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
