About Jacques Piccard
The Swiss oceanographer is known for the Bathyscaphe Trieste in 1958, a free diving self- driven deep-sea submersible. Together with US Navy Officer Lt. Don Walsh he was one of the earliest people in the Challenger Deep to discover the Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific Ocean. on January 23, 1960.
He co-authored the book "Seven Miles Down", an account of the historic dive which he wrote with acclaimed geologist Robert Deitz Piccard in 1961. He co-founded the World Cultural Council in 1981 and also formed the Foundation for the Study and Protection of Seas and Lakes in Cully, Switzerland. He wrote the book "The Sun Beneath the Sea" in 1971.
Family and Early Career
His father was Auguste Piccard, an explorer and engineer. Piccard taught economics at the University of Geneva and continued to assist his father enhance the bathyscaphe.
Honors
The oceanographer won the Hubbard Medal in 2012 and was also the recipient of the Howard N. Potts Medal in 1972.
Piccard was given an honorary degree (Doctor honoris causa) by the Catholic University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve).
