About Jaime Sabines
Jaime Sabines never looked back when he decided to turn to writing after initially pursuing a medical career. Nicknamed the “sniper of literature”, the Mexican poet had a knack for producing works that capture the everyday lives of people, as well as the problems we tend to grapple with.
Life & Major Works
Sabines was born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico and was of Spanish and Lebanese descent. He initially studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México before deciding to study literature.
Some of his published works include “Horal”, “Poemas sueltos”, “Maltiempo”, “La luna”, and “Nuevo recuento de poemas.”
The Mexican poet passed away in March 1999, aged 72.
Awards
Throughout his lifetime, Sabines received numerous awards, including the following:
- 1959 El Ateneo de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas Prize
- 1973 Xavier Villaurrutia Award
- 1983 National Prize for Language and Literature
- 1994 Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor, and
- 1996 Premio Mazatlán de Literatura
