About Jake Burton Carpenter
Jake Burton Carpenter, occasionally called Jakie, was an avid American snowboarder and was famously known for founding the snowboard manufacturing enterprise “Burton Snowboards.” His snowboards have been the world’s largest snowboarding equipment since the 1980s.
Background & Education
He was raised in Cedarhurst, New York. He graduated high school from The Marvelwood School in Connecticut. He then earned admission into the University of Colorado at Boulder. He always wanted to join the university’s skiing team but, unfortunately, his skiing career was aborted after he suffered severe injuries from a vehicle accident. However, he recovered from the accident after several years and resumed his college education at New York University, completing a degree in Economics.
Career & Business
After college, he temporarily worked for an investment firm in Manhattan. However, he left the company after feeling the need to return to skiing. In 1979, he won the Open Division of the National Surfing Contest.
However, in the 1970s, he worked as a snowboard inventor out of a barn in Londonderry, Vermont. In 1977, he established his snowboard firm, “Burton Snowboards” specializing in production of snowboarding-related items such as bindings, outerwear, snowboards, boots and accessories.
He is widely credited with developing the snowboarding economy as a culture, sport and business.
Death
Carpenter died of cancer at age 65 on November 20, 2019.
