About James Agee
The prolific American novelist was one of the most discerning and thorough film critics in his time. His critical analysis of a subject was often from the perspective of a consumer rather than an expert.
Early Life
Born in 1909, the Tennessee native studied at Harvard University, and wrote for Fortune magazine after he graduated in 1932. There he published his collection of poems “Permit Me Voyage.”
Career
Among the creative artists whose works he reviewed and appreciated were filmmakers such as Charlie Chaplin, Aleksandr Dovzhenko and D.W. Griffith. With his positive reviews of comic actors such as Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, he helped revive their ailing craft. Before his death, he wrote the novel, “A Death in the Family,” which was published posthumously in 1957.
Personal Life
He remained married to his third wife, Mia Fitcsh, until his death in 1955. He had 4 children. His first two wives were Via Saunders and Alma Mailman.
Legacy
His book “A Death in the Family” was awarded the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Some of his reviews and screenplays were compiled in the book “Agee on Film.”
