About James Anthony Murphy
The words of famous American statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin “wish not so much to live long as to live well”, sums up the life of James Anthony Murphy. He lived and died doing what he loved as a race car driver.
Early Life
Born to an Irish father and native Choctaw mother, Murphy grew up with an uncle and a family friend after his mother died. He attended Huntington Park High School, where he rode a motorcycle gifted to him to school daily. By the time he graduated he had become an excellent mechanic and driver.
The Driver
Murphy started his career in the 1916 Corona road race and won his first major race in 1920. The following year he won the French Grand Prix at Le Mans as the first American in an American-built car to win the Grand Prix. This dare-devil became National Champion for the Indy 500 race in 1922. The San Francisco, California-born race driver also bagged the American Racing Championship title in 1922 and 1924.
Death
Murphy’s winning streak was cut short in 1924 when he was killed in a dirt track race promoted by a friend. He was just 30 years old. He was posthumously inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1998.
