About James Blackwood
Dubbed “Mr. Gospel Singer of America”, James Blackwood is the only singer nominated for a Grammy award for twenty-eight straight years. He was the founding member of the gospel group The Blackwood Brothers.
Background
Despite being born to a sharecropper, James and his three siblings loved singing together at church events and school. In 1934, he founded The Blackwood Brothers with his brothers Roy, Doyle, and his nephew R. W.
Career
The Blackwood Brothers were known for their harmonious gospel tunes, they performed on several radio stations. The group broke up during the First World War but reunited in 1946 with new members Don Smith and Bill Lyles. They continued performing until 1954 when tragedy struck. Bill Lyles and R. W. were killed in a plane crash. The new group, including James’ son James Jr., and Roy's son Cecil, was very successful, winning eight consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Performance in 1966. James was elected to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1974 and kept performing until 2000 when he retired at 80.
