About James Cash Penney
James Cash Penney was a wealthy 20th-century American merchant and entrepreneur, famously known for establishing one of the country's largest department store chains, "JCPenney stores."
Early life & Education
He was born and raised in Caldwell County, Missouri. He graduated from Hamilton High School as a bright student and had ambitions of attending college. However, his father's sudden death in the 1890s changed his plans, as he was compelled to work as a store clerk to support his family.
Career & "JCPenney stores"
Due to medical reasons, he relocated to Longmont, Colorado, in 1897 and soon began working for the "Golden Rule stores." In 1902, shop owners (Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson) were so impressed with his work ethic that they offered him a one-third stake in the business. However, five years later, he bought out their shares and launched the genesis of what became the famous "J. C. Penney Company."
As the stores expanded, managers were granted equity in the firm. In addition, after the store began functioning as a partnership and sold all stocks publicly in 1927, all employees received income from profit-sharing agreements.
Before his death, the "J.C. Penney stores" had expanded to every state in America and were the country's second-largest nonfood merchant.
Death
He died from a heart attack, aged 95, on February 12, 1971.
