About James Connolly
Marxist union leader and Irish socialist James Connolly was one of the leading participants of the 1916 Easter Rising. He was part of the founding fathers of the Irish Socialist Republican Party.
His Life and Death
Connolly was born in Edinburgh into a poor home. He was educated up to the age of 10 and started working at age 11. He was drafted into the army at the age of 14 and served for 7 years in Ireland with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots Regiment.
He became an organizer for the Dublin Socialist Society in 1986. The Marxist leader moved to settle in the U.S in 1910. In the states, he was part of the organizers of the Industrial Workers of the World. Upon his return to Ireland, he and other like-minded individuals founded the Ireland Citizen Army (ICA).
Connolly and the ICA joined forces with the Irish Republican Brotherhood to go against British rule. Things didn’t go as they planned so they had to surrender to the British forces.
He was sentenced to death by firing squad.
