About James Francis Edward Stuart
James Francis Edward Stuart, dubbed "the Old Pretender," was the claimant to the Scottish, Irish, and English thrones as "James VIII" of Scotland and "James III" of Ireland and England.
Birth & Early Life
He was born in St. James's Palace, United Kingdom. Unfortunately, his father, King James II, was exiled and deposed months after his birth during the "Glorious Revolution of 1688." However, during the Revolution, his mother escaped with him to "Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye" in France, where he was raised.
In 1701, and at age 13, Spain, Modena, King Louis XIV of France, and the Papal States recognized him as the rightful heir and King to the Irish, Scottish, and English thrones. However, because Mary II and William III were legitimate sovereigns of the thrones during this period, he was charged for treason in the UK in 1702.
Efforts to the throne
Accompanied by his followers and his older cousin Louis XIV of France, he made various halfhearted attempts and efforts to gain the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. In 1715, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to gain the thrones during the 1715 "Jacobite Rising." In 1745, his son Charles Edward Stuart led another unsuccessful campaign to gain his throne.
Death
He died aged 77 on January 1, 1766, after suffering from a lingering illness.
