Admiral James Henry Flatley was a flying ace and naval tactician during World War II. He made significant contributions to naval aviation and demonstrated the supremacy of the US forces against the Japanese. The Navy Cross recipient shot down six hostile planes in aerial combat, saving countless lives in the process.
Early Life
He graduated from the United States Navy Academy in 1929. He began flying two years later. He began his navy career as a junior officer aboard the USS Saratoga and progressed with time.
Career
The Battle of the Coral Sea was his first significant engagement. He and his fellow fliers made a significant contribution to the defense of allied bombers and aircraft carriers while also taking out Japanese fighters and reconnaissance planes.
The "Thatch Weave" was one of his best tactical and defensive strategies that he popularized. The move allows two planes to defend against rear-attacks.
Honors
After the battle, he was awarded several honors, including the Navy Cross for Coral Sea for remarkable bravery and heroism and two Distinguished Flying Crosses for courage.
Family Life
His son, James Flatley III, was a Navy test pilot who rose to the rank of Rear Admiral.
