About James Longstreet
James Longstreet graduated from the military academy in 1842. He mostly served in the Army of Northern Virginia under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee where he was made the commander of the corps. He participated in many battles including the American Civil War, Battle of the Wilderness, and Mexican–American War.
Family
He was one of the children of Mary Ann Dent and James Longstreet. He spent most of his childhood with American lawyer and educator Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, his paternal uncle. He was married to Maria Louisa Garland from 1848 to 1889. He married journalist Helen Dortch in 1897.
Education
Growing up, he studied at the Academy of Richmond County before he was trained at the U.S. Military Academy.
Trivia
American actor Bruce Boxleitner portrayed his character in the 2003 film “Gods and Generals”.
On a political level, he was aligned to the Republican Party.
He was trained alongside Ulysses S. Grant and Daniel Harvey Hill.
