James McNeal Kelly is his full name, and he is a veteran NASA astronaut and a retired US Air Force Colonel. In addition, he has several experiences as a Space Shuttle pilot on space missions.

He is a 1982 graduate of Burlington Community High School. He earned a first degree in astronautical engineering in 1986 from the US Air Force Academy. He then obtained a master's degree in aerospace engineering in 1996 from the University of Alabama.
His career with the US Air Force began in May 1986, when he obtained his commission from the Academy. In June 1994, he graduated with honors from the "Air Force Test Pilot School." In addition, he won the "Liethen-Tittle Award" for being the outstanding graduate of "class 93B."
He has served on several missions for the Air Force in over 30 different aircraft with a logging time of over 2000 flight hours.

He has served as a pilot on two different shuttle missions, thus the "STS-102 Discovery" – (March 8 – 21 (2001)) and "STS-114 Discovery" – (July 26 – August 9 (2005)). The astronaut has logged over 640 hours in space.
