About James Michener
American author James Michener garnered a reputation for the diligent research he put into his writings. He published over 40 books on both fiction and non-fiction, many of which became bestsellers. Some of his most popular books are “Tales of the South Pacific”, “The World Is My Home” (his autobiography), “Hawaii”, “Chesapeake”, “The Drifters” and “Poland”. He was also a teacher, philanthropist, naval officer and political advisor.
Family Life
He was brought up in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania by Mabel Michener, his adoptive mother. He never got to meet his biological parents and had no idea of his exact origin. He was married three times including to translator Mari Yoriko Sabusawa, his third wife.
Achievements
He won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 1977 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Death
Four years leading to his death, he had been on dialysis treatment daily. He died on October 16, 1997 from kidney failure, days after going off dialysis.
