About James Naismith
He was a Canadian-American inventor, sports coach, physical educator, Christian chaplain and physician. He is noted for inventing basketball. James Naismith is known to have written the original basketball rule book as well as founding the University of Kansas basketball program.
His basketball invention became massively embraced by many as it got embraced into the Olympics in 1904. It became an official event at the 1936 Summer Olympics, which was held in Berlin. It also got adopted into the National Invitation Tournament in 1938, as well as the NCAA Tournament in 1939. He died as a result of brain hemorrhage in 1939 – he was at the age of 78 at the time.
He was born to father, John Naismith and mother, Margaret Young, who were Scottish immigrants. He became an orphan at an early age and he had to live with his aunt and uncle. He got married to Maude Evelyn Sherman in 1894 till her death in 1937. They birthed five children, namely; Margaret Mason, James Sherman, John Edwin, Helen Carolyn and Maude Ann.
In 1939, he got married to his second wife, Florence B. Kincaid.
He has been an inductee of many halls of fame including the Basketball Hall of Fame, the College Basketball Hall of Fame, and the FIBA Hall of Fame.
He got inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
He died five months after his second marriage.
He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Pi Gamma Mu fraternities.
