About James O. Richardson
James Otto Richardson became a member of the United States Navy in 1902 after graduating from the training school. He was initially stationed with the Asiatic Squadron and partook in the Philippine–American War.
Career
In 1907, he was made the commander of the Stockton and Tingey torpedo boats. After seven years, he joined the Bureau of Steam Engineering of the Department of the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Between 1917 and 1927, Richardson commanded a number of ships including the USS Asheville and the USS Nevada. Within that same period, he was made the commander of the naval operation dubbed ‘South China Patrol’.
He was appointed as the United States Fleet’s Commander in Chief in 1940. While serving in this position, he opted against the relocation of the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor. According to him, the fleet would be an easy target for the Japanese if there was to be a war. His fears came true in 1941 when the harbor was attacked by the Japanese.
Education
In 1898, he joined the United States Naval Academy.
Decorations
He received many laurels including the World War I Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Navy Spanish Campaign Medal.
Trivia
Richardson collaborated with Admiral George C. Dyer to publish a book titled “On the Treadmill to Pearl Harbor”.
