About James Oglethorpe
James Oglethorpe moved from his native England to train at a military camp in France. He later joined a Prince Eugene of Savoy-led army to fight in the infamous Austro-Turkish War.
Career
The British army officer returned to his home country in 1718 to start his political career. Four years later, he became a member of the House of Commons, a position he held until 1754. He gained global fame in 1732 when he made a journey to the Province of Georgia, becoming the founder of the state. That same year, he was made the Governor of the state.
Between 1739 and 1742, during the historic War of Jenkins' Ear, he commanded the British army against the Spanish troops.
Family
He was one of the children of Theophilus Oglethorpe and Eleanor Wall. He grew up together with nine siblings including Theophilus Oglethorpe Jr., and Lewis Oglethorpe. He was the husband of Elizabeth Wright.
Education
Oglethorpe studied at Corpus Christi College in Oxford and Eton College.
Trivia
During the infamous Seven Years' War, he worked with the Prussian Army as an undercover agent.
