About James Prescott Joule
James Prescott Joule was a physicist, mathematician and brewer. He hailed from England. He managed a brewery that originally belonged to his father as his full-time profession and pursued science as a hobby. He is known for his study on the relationship between heat and energy, which led to the formulation of the law of conservation of energy.
He is the namesake of the joule, the SI derived unit of energy as well as Joule’s first and second laws. He is also known for having collaborated on research with British mathematician and mathematical physicist Lord Kelvin on his temperature scale, the Kelvin scale.
Family Life
He was born to a brewer named Benjamin Joule and Alice Prescott, his wife. His 1847 marriage to Amelia Grimes produced three children and was cut short by her death in 1854.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Copley Medal, Royal Medal and Albert Medal.
Death
He died on October 11, 1889 at 70 years old.
