Van Der Beek first went to college to study music, but he ended up dropping out to be an actor. In the late 1990s, he began acting in plays and television. After a few lesser known roles, he scored the title role on the WB's Dawson Creek. This show helped him and his co-stars gain notice. Van Der Beek since has appeared in popular films including Varsity Blues, and The Rules of Attraction. He has also continued to act in television, with roles on shows like Criminal Minds and One Tree Hill.
