About Jânio Quadros
Jânio da Silva Quadros went down in history as the Brazilian president who stepped down after only seven months in office. His resignation threw the country into disarray and prepared the grounds for the coup of 1964.
Background
Born in São Paulo, he studied at the University of São Paulo. Prior to his political career, he set up a law practice and taught literature at the University.
Before Presidency
In 1953, he served as the Mayor of São Paulo. He soon resigned and contested for the state governorship position. He won the elections by a 1% margin and became State Governor. He was highly commended for his prompt response to the needs of the people as well as his efficient use of the city’s budget. His sense of integrity won him the trust of the masses. During his run for the presidency, he earned the votes of the commoners and entrepreneurs.
As President
During his short tenure as president, he was focused on creating reforms that would boost the country’s economy. He banned wearing swimsuits and gambling. He formed an alliance with the Soviet Union and appointed members of his party to various offices. In August 1961, he tendered in his resignation to Congress.

In1939, he got married to Aloa do Valle.
