Jaroslaw Kacynski, in full Jarosław Aleksander Kaczyński, is a highly revered Polish politician. He is a co-founder and head of the “Law and Justice Party,” famously known by their acronym “PiS.”
Kaczynski is a preeminent figure in Polish politics, having served as the prime minister of Poland and the leading strategist of the PiS in various national elections. As a result, some sections of the Polish public call him the “Chief of State.”
Background & Education
Jaroslaw is the twin brother of the late and former Polish President Lech Kaczynski. He read law at Warsaw University, earning his Doctor of Law degree in 1976.
Political Career Highlights
Between 1970 and 1980, he worked for many organizations in Poland, including the Solidarity trade union, Committee for Social Self-Defense, and Workers’ Defense Committee.
In the 1990s, he worked as the “Chief of the Presidential Chancellery” under President Lech Wałęsa. In 2001, he co-founded the “PiS” with his twin brother. During President Lech Kaczynski’s administration, he served as Poland’s prime minister between 2006 and November 2007.
Unfortunately, in 2010, he suffered a defeat as the presidential candidate of PiS during Poland’s presidential elections.
He has been part of the “Sejm” since 1997 and was appointed Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister in 2020.
