About Jasper Carrott
Jasper Carrot, born Robert Norman Davis, is a highly recognized English comedian, film star, and television presenter. He has achieved many successes in his lifetime, notably earning the appointment to the rank of "Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)" for his great works for charity and his induction into the prestigious "Birmingham Walk of Stars."
Background & Early Life
He is a native of Birmingham, England. Carrot attended the Moseley Grammar School and Acocks Green Primary School. At age nine, he nicknamed himself Jasper, and at 17, he added the last name Carrott. During his youth, he held a trainee buyer position at the "Beehive," – a department store in the heart of Birmingham.
In 1969, he formed his folk club "The Boggery" with his colleague Les Ward. Carrot initially performed regularly as a folk singer and occasionally as a comedian. In 1975, he released his novelty A-side record, "Funky Moped," which ranked in the top 5 hit records on the UK chart. However, over time, his banter with his audience overtook his singing, eventually earning him the reputation as one of the best comedians in the club.
As a comedian, he developed his famous autobiographical, anecdotal sketches in the early 1980s. Notable releases from these sketches include "Sweet and Sour Labrador" and "A Little Zit on the Side."
He has made numerous television appearances on "BBC" and "LVT" and has starred in over 20 television films since 1975.
He was a co-owner of "Celador" – the production company responsible for the famous British program "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" However, in 2006, Jasper and his wife Hazel Jackson sold all their shares in "Celador" for £10m.
