About Javier Solana
This Spanish diplomat altered his career from teaching physics to negotiating treaties and deals between continents. Javier Solana was an eloquent politician who will be remembered for being in the center of some of the most significant events in the 20th century.
Early Education
He was born in 1942 to a prominent family in Madrid. He was a politically active student while at Complutense University. He joined the protest against the Vietnam War as a student at the University of Virginia. He returned to Spain in 1975 to lecture at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
Career
He took over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the terminally ill Francisco Fernández Ordóñez in 1992. His reputation as a discreet diplomat grew in his thirteen years of service as a cabinet member.
Solana, who was the 9th Secretary General of NATO, worked very hard during the Bosnian conflict in order to bring an amicable resolution to the conflict.
He took on the role of Secretary General of the Council of the European Union. He was outspoken about the treatment of Guantanamo Bay detainees and negotiated treaties between Europe and various Middle Eastern countries.
Personal Life
He is married to Concepción Giménez and they have two children.
Trivia
Solana’s older brother, Luis Solana Madariaga was jailed in 1959 by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco for his political activities.
