About Jean Arthur
Jean Arthur worked as a model before she was unearthed by Fox Film Studios. She made her acting debut in the 1923 silent film entitled “Cameo Kirby”. Her association with filmmaker Frank Capra played a crucial role in her rise to fame. The two teamed up on many films including “You Can't Take It with You” and “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”.
Her numerous performances on Broadway made her one of the most versatile actresses of her generation. She and Dorothy Gish appeared in the 1932 production “Foreign Affairs”.
Family
Her original name was Gladys Georgianna Greene, and spent her childhood with her parents Hubert Sidney Greene and Johanna Augusta Nelson. She had three siblings named Donald Hubert Greene, Albert Sidney Greene, and Robert Brazier Greene.
In 1928, she got married to her first husband Julian Anker. The marriage was annulled later that year. Between 1932 and 1949, she was married to Frank Ross Jr.
Honors
A plaque was unveiled at Plattsburgh, New York to celebrate her life. On the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, she has been honored with a star.
Trivia
She was unable to complete her high school education.
She was paid $50,000 for her role in “The Talk of the Town”. The amount was half of what her male counterparts received for the same movie.
