About Jean-Baptiste Say
Best remembered for his Law of Markets, the Lyon native was a French liberal political economist who greatly impacted the neoclassical economic school of thought.
Early Years
Jean-Baptiste was educated in an unorthodox school in Écully. One of his earliest works was as an editor of a magazine, which championed the ideas of the French Revolution. His philosophy was inspired by economists such as Pietro Verri and Richard Cantillon.
Notable Facts
As an economist, he sat on the Government Finance committee under Napoleon and was a strong advocate for free trade and ease in business transactions. Jean-Baptiste also serves as a professor of political economy at the College de France.
The Law of Markets
His most significant achievement, arguably, was establishing the Law of Markets in 1803. The Law asserts that “all markets will clear because there will always be demand for something if it is supplied given the right price.”
Accolade
He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1826.
