Jean-François Copé is a politician who has played an important role in making structural reforms in France.
Career
After graduating from school in 1989, he worked in the French public finance sector for two years before taking up a teaching job at Science-Po.
Copé branched into politics in the mid-1990s. In 1995, he was elected Mayor of Meaux and was re-elected to serve in 2001 and 2008. In 2010, he was made General Secretary of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP).
Controversy
In 2014, Copé was accused of using his friend’s company as the main contractor for the UMP’s events. He denied the claims and sued the magazine.
After his party’s poor performance in the 2014 European elections, coupled with the accusation, he resigned from his party’s seat. He was eventually cleared of all charges.
