About Jean-François Millet
Jean-François Millet was a French realist artist whose works were mostly about peasant farmers. His rise to prominence began in 1840 when his first work was exhibited at the Paris Salon. Millet went on to produce many interesting paintings with the most popular ones titled “The Gleaners”, “The Angelus”, and “Shepherdess Seated on a Rock”. He was considered as one of the founding fathers of the famous Barbizon school.
Family
He was raised by his parents Aimée-Henriette-Adélaïde Henry Millet and Jean-Louis-Nicolas. His wife Pauline-Virginie Ono died in 1844.
Education
Millet was trained at the École des Beaux-Arts.
Honors
He was a recipient of the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
Trivia
His works inspired Edwin Markham’s 1898 poem entitled "The Man With the Hoe".
He studied under renowned painter Baron Gros.
Millet befriended a number of great painters including Narcisse Diaz and Constant Troyon.
Aside from oil paintings, he was also into etchings and pastels.
