About Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American painter, poet and musician who achieved notoriety during the late 1970s as part of the graffiti duo SAMO that spray painted graffiti on buildings in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. After the demise of SAMO, he gained further recognition exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries across the globe. In the mid-1980s, he collaborated with pop artist Andy Warhol on several paintings. After Warhol's death in 1987, he became depressed and isolated. He died the following year at the age of 27 of a heroin overdose.
Family Life
He was the second of four children born to Matilda Andrades and Gerard Basquiat. His father kicked him out of his house after he dropped out of high school.
