About Jean Sibelius
Jean Sibelius was a composer of Finish descent. Sibelius, who was also an accomplished violinist, is largely regarded as one of the greatest composers in Europe.
He is famous for works such as “Valse triste”, “Finlandia”, and his set of seven symphonies, which is the highlight of his career as a composer.
Family
He birthed six children (all females) with his wife Aino, the daughter of Finish general Alexander Järnefelt. His youngest child died in 1900 due to typhoid.
His father was a medical doctor named Christian Sibelius. His mum was known as Maria Sibelius. He had two siblings, an elder sister named Linda and a younger brother named Christian, who was a renowned psychiatrist.
At the age of three he lost his father, through typhoid fever. He was then brought up by his mother and her family.
He developed an interest in music after his uncle (Pehr Sibelius) gifted him a violin at the age of ten.
Education
He graduated from Hämeenlinna Normal Lyceum in 1885. He proceeded to the Imperial Alexander University in Finland, where he briefly studied law. He dropped out of the said institution to pursue a career in music at Sibelius Academy (formerly called Helsinki Music Institute).

The composer was named Johan Julius Christian Sibelius at birth.
He recorded his first musical work in 1881 entitled “Vattendroppar”.
He received training on how to play the violin from Gustaf Levander. He was also trained by Italian composer and pianist Ferruccio Busoni. He studied with German composer Albert Becker.
He was friends with Swedish writer and pianist Adolf Paul.
His work “Finlandia” has been highly praised for its symbolism to the independence of Finland.
