About Jeane Kirkpatrick
Jeane Kirkpatrick, born Jeane Duane Jordan, was a revered American diplomat and political scientist. She is widely remembered for being the first woman to serve as the US ambassador to the United Nations.
Background & Education
After attending Mt. Vernon township high school, she entered Stephens College, earning an associate degree in 1946. She also earned a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in 1948, and a Ph.D. and master’s in political science from Columbia University in 1968 and 1950, respectively. In addition, she did post-graduate studies at Sciences Po.
Career Highlights
Kirkpatrick was a political science professor at Georgetown University between 1967 and 1973. She subsequently became a professor emeritus, retiring from the institution in 2002.
She initially belonged to the Democratic Party, serving on various anti-communist committees, before officially joining the Republicans in 1985. However, in the 1970s, she regularly criticized the Democrats. Ex-President Ronald Reagan capitalized on her criticisms and eventually made her the foreign policy adviser of his 1980 presidential campaign.
During Reagan’s administration, she served on the Defense Policy Review Board, Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, and the National Security Council. In addition, she became the first female US ambassador to the United Nations. She supported international authoritarian regimes and was notable for her “Kirkpatrick Doctrine.”
Death
She died from heart failure in 2006.
