About Jedediah Smith
Jedediah Smith was a popular American explorer whose name is in the history books as the leader of the first documented journey to the famous Colorado River from the border of Salt Lake. He was also known as the first American citizen to enter into Nueva California, now California, through the Mojave Desert.
During the nineteenth century, he explored a number of places which included the Western and Southwestern parts of the United States, as well as the Rocky Mountains.
Family
He was the son of Sally Strong and Jedediah Smith I. His three brothers were named Peter, Austin, and Ira Smith.
Death
The real cause of Smith’s death has not been established. While some have argued that he might have been killed by the Comanche, others have also stated that he died from natural causes during one of his journeys.
Trivia
He was a clerk at the age of 13 years. He joined Andrew Henry and General William H. Ashley’s fur trade at a stage in his life.
